Jane Jones Obituary

Taylor funeral home of Louisville announces the death and funeral services of Mrs. Betty Jane Jones of Church Street, Bartow, GA who died Sunday morning in the Augusta University Medical Center after a brief, unexpected illness. She was 74.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, January 24, 2018, in the Bartow Methodist Church, with Dr. Don Harp and Reverend David Boggs officiating. Burial will follow in the Bartow City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Clark Evans VI, Seth Evans, John Paul Newton, Zach Smith, John Durden and Chip Evans.

Mrs. Jones was a native of Bartow, Ga., in Jefferson County, the daughter of the late Ernest Clinton Smith Jr. and Doretha Sheppard Smith. She graduated from Wadley High School and then followed her sister’s footsteps to Sullins College, a two-year women’s college in Bristol, Va. At Sullins, her outstanding singing voice allowed her to solo for numerous concerts, and friends frequently commented on the powerful voice coming from the tiny woman with the big heart.

After graduating, she enrolled at the University of Georgia in Athens, where she met her future husband, Woody Jones, and joined Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority (Mr. Jones was a member of Lambda Chi Fraternity). Mrs. Jones earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education, and one month after graduation, she and Mr. Jones married and moved to Atlanta. For 52 years, they lived in Sandy Springs, where Jane primarily taught seventh-grade social studies and science in the Fulton County public school system.

The big heart she was known for in college also came through as a teacher, as she made sure that the students who came from troubled homes were always given the support they needed, ensuring that they passed her class with a sense of pride and accomplishment. Years later, her graduates still approached her with a smile, fond memories, and hugs.

Jane was also a member of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church for 45 years. While there, she taught a children’s Sunday School class for 12 years and was a member of the choir. Through her children, she was also actively engaged in the Highpoint Elementary School PTA, served as a Cub Scout Leader (sewing on endless badges to uniforms for her boys) and hosting meetings in her home. Her fabulous cooking skills of all southern foods will be missed by her friends and family.

She is survived by her husband, Lewis N. (Woody) Jones, Bartow, Ga; sons, Lewis N. Jones, Jr. and Angela, Lakeland, Fl. and Scott P. Jones and Deborah, Bowdon, Ga., and her daughter, Elizabeth (Liz) Jane Pope of Covington, Ga.; brother, Ken Smith and Ann of Bartow, Ga., and sister, Joann Smith Evans and Clark of Bartow, Ga.; grandchildren, Ivey McRae Jones, Ashley Elizabeth Pope, Elijah Scott Jones, Bella Capri Jones and William Gregory Pope, Jr.; several nieces and nephews.

The Jones family will receive friends 11:00 am till 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, in the Church prior to the services. Those who are desiring, memorials may be sent to Peachtree Road United Methodist Church, 3180 Peachtree Road NE Atlanta, Ga., 30305.
