Hellen Hartley Obituary

Taylor Funeral Home of Louisville announces the death and funeral services of Mrs. Hellen Glover Hartley, 86 of Louisville, who passed away peacefully on May 18, 2022. Hellen was born on August 26, 1935, to Edward Watson Glover and Estelle Humphrey Glover in Washington County, GA. After graduating from Louisville Academy, she went on to work as an operator for Southern Bell in Wadley, GA.

Hellen’s life was always about family. Her parents instilled that into her and her siblings at an early age. They knew what it meant to work hard and earn their keep. Faith, family, and friends surrounded her childhood. From family gatherings with her siblings, aunts, and uncles; gospel music always permeated the air. Shelling peas on the front porch, picking corn, fresh peaches, Friday night fish fry’s; there was always love, laughter, music, and great food in their home. Hellen was raised on true southern traditions that she carried with her through every phase of her life. She was a true Southern Lady.

On April 12, 1958, she married the love of her life, William Frank (Frankie) Hartley. They had two beautiful daughters, Debbie, and Lisa. Frankie and Hellen worked together, side-by-side for 25 years at Hartley’s Cleaners where she shared another talent . . . sewing. She was an expert seamstress, making most of her daughter’s clothes during their younger years. She was also an excellent alterationist. Together, Frankie and Hellen made a great team and shared a love and respect for one another that lasted for 54 wonderful years.

Hellen continued her love for cooking and baking. Her table was always full of good ole southern cooking. Her daughters would fight over the pulley bone when she fried chicken. Her lacy cornbread was a family favorite, and she made the BEST chocolate pudding, cakes, pies. At family reunions, relatives would go straight for her desserts because they did not want to miss out. Everyone always wanted to eat at Ms. Hellen’s.

Hellen’s greatest love was her grandkids. She would light up like a Christmas tree when they walked in the room . . . her heart was full. She had so much love to give; as well as, always having chocolate chip cookies and muffins. Nana, that’s what they called her, knew the way to their hearts . . . food.

Frankie and Hellen traveled a good bit after they retired and enjoyed annual beach trips to Hilton Head with the family. Thanksgiving and Christmas were her favorite holidays because she knew the whole family would all be together. Again, it was always about family. She was the “Heart” of the home, always filling it with warmth, kindness, and love.

Hellen is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 54 years, William Frank (Frankie) Hartley; her father Edward (Snap) Watson Glover and mother Estelle Humphrey Glover. Brother, Charles Glover, and sister Hazel Moore.

Hellen is survived by her daughters Debbie Hartley Shelton (Billy); Lisa Hartley Howell (Mike); her grandchildren Zach Smith, Cody Howell, and Will Shelton (Whitney); her sister Odie Futral (Roy Bennett); brother Dan Glover (Joan); sister-in-law, Judy Hartley Bussell; niece Cathy Bussell Smith (Corky); Penny Glover; Stephanie Moore Poole, and an extensive list of family and close friends.
